First they selected a photograph and printed it out on regular paper. Then they put the photo face down on the wood and applied Heavy Gel Medium with a paintbrush. This stuff causes the ink to absorb into the wood and then the paper can be peeled off and washed away. The result is a photo imprinted in a wood block. I've never heard of this, but it worked.
Then the kids sanded the wood block. The wood block was cut with a screw hole in the middle and a square cut into the wood in the back (not going all the way through) for the clock mechanism. The kids inserted the clock mechanism and stuck on the numbers.
Then they used a wood burning tool to add their own inscription.
What a beautiful project! I had never heard about that stuff either. I am following you from We Made That. I have a linky for arts and crafts on Creative Saturdays on my blog. Hope you can link in.

The clock looks wonderful, and the steps as you've explained them seem quite do-able even for an older child. I've looked up gel medium and added it to gesso and modge podge in my list of exciting concoctions I'd never heard of until I started homeschooling!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great activity and keepsake!
