Celtic history co-op. Week 1: Salt Maps

Week 1: We made maps with salt dough.

When the Persian Empire thrived and Alexander the Great was busy conquering, the Celts lived in the northern European countries of England, Scotland, Germany, Austria, and France. To gain a better understanding of their territory, we created maps with salt dough.

Salt Dough Recipe;
1 cup of salt
2 cups of flour
1 cup of warm water

Mix and it's ready to use

Beginning with a map of Europe and a handful of dough the land was created. More dough was used for high land in the area of mountains, and less in low areas near the sea.

The dough and paper were painted with blue, green and brown paint to represent water, land and mountains.

Rivers were painted onto the maps.

Important cities were labeled with toothpick paper flags.

  1. Hello. :D I saw your blog with the homeschool newsgroup and think it is very interesting. I tried to sign in under my blog, but was told that I didn't have permission, so signed in under my liveJournal. :D One question is what do you have to do about homeschool being illegal in Germany?

  2. Homeschooling is illegal in Germany. We are here for a limited time and covered under the SOFA - Status of Forces Agreement the US goverment has with the Germans. Among other things it protects our rights as Americans to homeschool.

  3. These maps are pretty neat. We've used salt dough before, but all for simple ornaments. Thanks for sharing at AfterSchool.

  4. Thank you for sharing this with Look What We Did. It sounds like your homeschool history co-op is a great experience! It's a smart idea to start out learning about a new culture by doing a map activity.

  6. I've been homeschooling for more than 6 years now & I've never made a salt dough map. I think that probably disqualifies me as a "real" homeschool mom. ;) I really do want to do this soon. Yours looks great.

    1. Oh I don't think so. With so many activities to choose from we all want to do everything, but just never get to it. There just aren't enough hours in the day.

  9. That is a really cool idea. My daughter loves geography and knows the names of a bunch of countries. I will have to do this for her. Thanks for sharing at Mom's Library!

  10. Thanks for posting this! I was just thinking of a project I did like this as a child in school, and thinking I wanted to share it with my dd - but didn't know the recipe. Perfect timing.
