Rome began with the legend of Romulus and Remus. The twins were put into the River Tiber in a basket, discovered and reared by a she wolf. Symbols of the twins and the wolf can be seen all over Rome today.
Roman Myths (Myths and Legends) by Andrew Masters and Roman Myths by Geraldine McCaughrean are two books of Roman Mythology that we enjoyed.
Once Romulus and Remus were grown they started the city, but soon got into a fight over who would be the king. Romulus won the battle after Remus stepped over his wall.

This is a great idea. The oral tradition was so much a part of it back then.
