Growing Fruit Trees

My son is growing fruit trees. I like to plant a garden every summer to teach the kids where food comes from, see what we can get to grow, and encourage the kids. Now my son is taking the lead in the gardening activities. He loves to eat and enjoys science so it's only natural that he would want to grow an orchard.

Since I can't answer his numerous questions about fruit trees he has turned to youtube and the internet.

Mitchell Boyle has a series of videos on planting and growing various fruit trees. He is not an expert, but more of an experimenter himself. Watching him try various methods of getting different fruits to grow encourages my son to experiment. His enthusiasm is contagious and his commentary is comical. I can see why my son is one of his biggest fans. - Please preview this without children. He does use adult language.

He started by collecting seeds from apples, plums, peaches, and everything else we brought home from the grocery store. The seeds were wrapped in wet paper towels and sprouted in a container in the kitchen.

Once they sprouted he transplanted them into soil and labeled each one.

Now he cares for them by watering them every day.

  1. I was very upset with his language. I should have previewed this with no grandchildren around. We will not be watching him. Which is too bad because there was good information in this video.

    1. You are absolutely right. I revised the paragraph under the video to recommending previewing.

    2. Thanks. That kind of heads-up is important. :)

  2. So cool! My husband is really into backyard gardening. I hope my son is as interested in it as your son. How awesome would it be to have your own orchard? We have 8 fruit trees that we planted last month. I will definitely try to save some seeds from it to grow. I would love to read more details about how he cared for the seeds to get them to sprout. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I will have to watch it later (or with head phones). My oldest kept wanting to try this last year, but all the instructions I found seemed difficult. Maybe this year! Thanks for sharing at Mom's Library!
