Speed! makes skip-counting loads of fun, and mastery of skip-counting makes multiplication easy. Two players compete against each other to be the first to get rid of their cards, but they must watch-out...... if the number in the middle is the same they must be the first to shout Speed!, otherwise they will get all the played cards added to their stack.

Playing the Game

Check out this video showing a round of Three Speed in action.

The game comes with eight decks of cards, 2's through 9's. Each deck is played the same way, only the numbers change. For example, the Three-Speed deck contains the numbers 3 through 30 in multiples of 3's and the Eight-Speed deck contains the numbers 8 through 80 in multiples of 8's.

How it Works: Skip-Counting to Multiplication

When kids play Speed! they not only learn to skip-count, but gain valuable number sense skills that help in learning multiplication, division, factoring, reducing fractions and the many math skills which build on skip-counting. The best way to help a child gain this type of number sense is to play consistently with one deck of cards. When a child can easily beat an adult that child is ready for the next deck.

The repetition of playing with one deck of cards until the child is extremely familiar with the deck helps them to make associations between numbers. In learning more advanced mathematical concepts such as reducing fractions, they will instinctively recognize related numbers. For example, given the fraction 15/21, they will understand that the numbers 15 and 21, are related by the number 3 because they were both in the Three-Speed deck of cards. The 15 was the 5th card and the 21 was the 7th card, therefore the fraction 15/21 can be reduced to 5/7.

This video explains how it works.

How Families Use the Game

Parents, tutors, teachers, homeschooling families, and kids love Speed! because it's fun to play. Since the rounds of Speed! are fast paced and last less than five minutes, educators often use this game as a reward at the end of a lesson. Others use it as their primary method for teaching multiplication, using it in place of a math curriculum. Since two people can play with one deck of cards, up to 16 kids can be busy memorizing their multiplication tables with one box of Speed! making Speed! a great option for co-ops and schools. In addition, the quantity of decks enables Speed! to be used for "Final-Four" style tournaments.

    1. Kids love Speed!, but it isn't available in stores. The only place you can get it is on Amazon.com and in the iPad store for the electronic version.

    3. I have the new ones in stock at my house. If you want one please send me an email. jmommymom - at - gmail - dot - com and place an order through my blog with a comment.

The updated font cards will go to amazon when the old inventory runs out. That seems to be difficult to estimate. Right now I'm thinking maybe March.
