There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly

There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly is a song I remember from elementary school. When I had children my mom found this Old Lady with all the animals she swallowed ready for insertion into her mouth. I love to take it out with a group of children. They kids have so much fun taking turns putting in the animals.

The simple, quirky, silly song is about a lady who swallows a series of animals to catch the fly. My favorite is when she swallows the spider that wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.

Here is a youtube video of this silly song.
I always thought this old lady was handmade, so I was very surprised to find it on amazon. If you are a crafty person making an old lady and all the animals like this would be awesome. I think many simpler versions out of paper or using stuffed beanie babies could be incorporated into an fun activity for children.

  1. Landstuhl Library has a "grab bag" which includes the doll and the book. I think there may be a CD with the song too! I love making a book "multisensory" especially with creative little minds!

  5. We actually have a doll very much like the one you have pictured, and a copy of that same book, at our public library where I work.
