Legends explain why things are the way they are. There are so many wonderful legend stories for children and here are a few of our favorites.



Animal legends are the main theme in this collection of legends. Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling explain how the elephant got his long trunk, the spots on the leopard and the origins of writing.

Kathy-Jo Wargin is the author of several books detailing the legends of Michigan. The illustrations alone make these books a wonderful addition to any children's collection.

  1. I didn't realize Michigan had so many legends...now I have to go and see if Montana has any that have been written into books. And, now I also want to know why Chinese children have short names!
