Cuisenaire Rods - First Introduction

We began our exploration of Cuisenaire Rods by creating pictures, counting and skip-counting.

Cusienaire Rods are colorful math manipulatives. Each color rod is a different unit in length.

1 cm = white
2 cm = red
3 cm = green
4 cm = purple
5 cm = yellow
6 cm = blue-green
7 cm = black
8 cm = brown
9 cm = blue
10 cm = orange

After building this picture, some crazy counting was done to get familiar with the rods. Beginning at the person's hat, the rods were counted 1,2, 3, 4, 6, and then 5, 5, 5, 5 for his head and so on down his body. Naming the lengths of the rods is a simple introduction.

The main body of the house was constructed of 8 orange rods, which are 10 cm long. Therefore, the house body was skip-counted; 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80. The grass, constructed of 3 cm rods, was skip-counted both by 3's and by 6's, as was the man's head and body.

Exploring Cuisenaire Rods has become a reoccurring math activity at Highhill Education. Please visit again next week for discovering addition families with Cuisenaire Rods.
