Best Girl Books

Boys and girls can read any book, but some just seem to be preferred by girls or boys. Here are a few my girls really love.

The Milly-Molly-Mandy Storybook is my favorite first read-aloud chapter book for girls. Milly-Molly-Mandy has so many innocent adventures like the time she runs the village store when the owner has to step out. One day her parents redecorate the jam room, but it turns out to be a surprise new bedroom for Milly-Molly-Mandy.

The Betsy-Tacy Treasury: The First Four Betsy-Tacy Books (P.S.)

Betsy and Tacy were best friends. One day they both wanted to be queen of the May and so did one of their sisters. During their contest to get the most votes in their favor they went to a nearby village and made some new friends.

A Little Princess is a classic rags to riches or riches, to rags and back again story. Her life takes a hard turn when she is left in a private school. Unfortunately her father dies and her money is gone, so the school's patron doesn't treat her nearly so well. When Sarah is down on her luck she never complains and still treats everyone with respect. She is a model personality every young girl, boy, and adult should strive to equal.

Young Royals Boxed Set: The Tudor Women is a series that comes with high recommendations from my daughter. There are four books that each focus on a different woman of British Royalty. In Patience Princess Catherine, her husband Arthur died soon after their marriage. She was left alone to live in poverty until she finally became queen.

  1. The Milly-Molly-Mandy book really interests me. I have two boys and two girls and we read a picture book and a chapter from a chapter book each night before bed. I try to alternate between boyish books and girlish books, and this looks to be right up our alley. Have you ever seen the "Noisy Village" books by Astrid Lindgren? She is the author of the Pippi Books, but this series is about about some Swedish farm children and their everyday life/adventures. It is written from a girl's perspective, but isn't overly girly. There are two picture books and two chapter books.

    1. Dana - We've read all four Pippi books, but haven't heard of the Noisy Village. Thanks for the recommendation.
