Renaissance Books for Kids

Posts from our Renaissance Unit Study are beginning this Saturday. Here is a great list of living books on the Renaissance period.

Renaissance Books


  • Leonardo Da Vinci by Emily Hahn not only tells the story of Leonardo da Vinci's life, but also gives much information about important people and events surrounding Leonardo during the Renaissance.
  • Leonardo's Horse - Near the end of his life, Leonardo spent a long time designing an enormous horse. Although it was never built, this book tells the story. 
  • Leonardo and the Flying Boy (Anholt's Artists Books for Children) - Picture book for young children which tells a story about Leonardo and his flying machines.
  • Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare by E Nesbit is free on Librivox. This set of audio Shakespeare tales is perfect for children and a good refresher for adults.
  • Mary, Bloody Mary is one book in a four book series detailing the lives of Tudor women in an entertaining way. Beware Princess Elizabeth, Doomed Queen Anne, and Patience Princess Catherine are the other three titles in the series.
  • Good Queen Bess : The Story of Elizabeth I of England  
  • Bard of Avon: The Story of William Shakespeare
  • Michelangelo by Diane Stanley contains pictures of many famous Michelangelo works. Beginning with his childhood, the story follows him as he moves throughout Italy and completes the Pieta, David and Sistine Chapel.
  • Bravo! Zan Angelo! is about a little boy who wants to perform during the carnival in Venice. This picture book is fun for kids ages 5-10.
  • Dante's Daughter - Dante's work was written for adults. This book introduces children to Dante through the eyes of his daughter. His life and role in society are intertwined with the story of his daughter's life. Both Dante and his daughter traveled throughout Italy and France. This historical fiction book engages the reader in their lives.
