Hippodrome in Istanbul

The Hippodrome in Istanbul, Turkey was a chariot racing track during the Byzantine Empire. In addition to chariot racing, it was used for other community events. Now it is a resting spot filled with ancient monuments. Located next to the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque it is an ideal spot for a picnic.

The monuments on display in the hippodrome were taken from various locations around the empire. The Obelisk of Thutmosis was constructed around 1490 BC in Egypt and brought to Istanbul in 390.

The Walled Obelisk dates to the 10th century and was damaged during the crusades.

The German Fountain was a gift to Istanbul in 1898 and helped to greatly improve relations between the two countries.
