Basilica di San Zeno

The Church of Saint Zeno in Verona, Italy has a rich history. The current church dates to the end of the 11th century. Prior to that, in the 6th century, a smaller church and monestary stood at the site. This church became too small and a larger church was built in 806. The larger church was destroyed by the Hungarians and rebuilt between 963 and 983. Again, the church required enlargement which was done during the 11th century.
Some historians believe parts of the cloister date to the 6th century church.

Surrounding the alter are many frescos intended as a bible for illiterate peasants. The grafiti on these frescos are actually prayers which date to the 13th century.
