Schloss Hellbrunn

This daytime villa was built by the Salzburg Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus. It is about 20 minutes by car outside of Salzburg and was built as a hunting camp and place to entertain guests. It is by far the favorite palace of my children for one reason only - the trick fountains.

Markus Sittikus must have really had a sense of humor. The castle contains several trick fountains. Guests seated at this table would be drenched when he had the trick fountain turned on. Notice how the stool at the head of the table doesn't have any water coming near it.

Here is another place Markus Sittikus played tricks on his guests. This elaborate music box contains several scenes from city life. As guests watched the show they were squirted with water. Where do you think the water came from? From behind - Ha! He got us!

Sometimes guests were sprayed with water when passing through doorways.

Inside the palace is elaborately decorated. Perhaps you recognize it. It was the home of Captain Von Trap in the movie The Sound of Music. We watched the movie after returning home and could tell where many of the scenes were shot.
