Burg Nanstein

Castles dating to the middle ages are located all over Germany. There are at least four within a 30 minute drive from our house. Most were built during the 12th century and destroyed one or more times during various wars. Burg Nanstein is no exception.

Built in the 12th century by the Emperor Barbarossa, Burg Nanstein in Landstuhl is makes a fun quick visit. There is parking available right outside the castle, or it can be reached by a short hike.

Upon entering the castle there is much to explore.

Perhaps this is the remains of a medieval circular staircase.

The kids love walking in the large tunnel underneath the castle.

Ms. Frizzle's Adventures; Medieval Castle by Joanna Cole is a great book that explains what life was like when knights and kings ruled the lands of Europe.
