A casemate is a bomb proof underground room. The city of Luxembourg has over 17 km of casemates.
Construction of casemates began in 1644 and the Bock Casemates date to 1745. In addition to being used to defend the city, they are capable of housing 35,000 people in an underground world that forms a complete city of its own with workshops, bakeries and other infrastructures.
