Fasching (German Carnival) is somewhat similar to carnival in New Orleans. It begins on November 11, at 11:11 am. The highlight is the parade at the end of the season (on Rose Monday or Fat Tuesday) where people dress in costume, play music and have a great big party before Lent begins.

When we first moved here, quite by accident, we managed to become associated with the dancing portion of a local Fasching club. For me and the girls it has been the best part of living in Germany.

As members of the club, among other things, we (yes, that now includes me) practice dancing once or twice per week, perform at a small summer festival, partake in the wonderful Christmas party, compete in the winter, perform at over eight shows in the two weeks before the parade, and walk in the parade. Oh yes! As the only Americans I know of currently in this club we practice our German. (Most Germans in the area speak wonderful English).
