The power that comes out of the wall is different. North America 110/120 volts; Germany 220-240 volts. This means that unless the device specifically says it will operate with both voltages it should not be used. If an American power device is plugged into the wall with German power it will stop working. The plugs are different, so the only way this could be done is by using an adapter.
